 You may qualify for FREE protection under the Illinois Security Deposit Return Act and the Illinois Security Deposit Interest Act if you rented an apartment in the State of Illinois.

 If your apartment unit, condo, house, CHAC/Section 8 subsidized housing, or townhouse was located in the CITY OF CHICAGO, the Chicago Residential Landlord Tenant Ordinance (“RLTO”) provides further protection for renters and ADDITIONAL RIGHTS, including but not limited to: 

1)          Interest on your security deposit, key deposit, pet deposit, or any pre-paid rent for each 12 month period you occupied the unit;

 

2)          Your entire security deposit after forty-five days after you vacate the apartment;

 

3)          Essential services, including but not limited to: heat, water, and electricity;

 

4)          Prohibition against wrongful eviction proceedings, unenforceable lease provisions, excessive fines and late fees, a landlord’s retaliatory conduct for exercising your rights under the RLTO; and

 

5)             copy of a summary of these rights and additional rights under the Chicago Residential Landlord Tenant Ordinance.
